An Operational Learning Team (OLT) is a collaborative group focused on learning from normal work, particularly operational successes and failures, to improve processes, safety, and performance within an organisation. Rooted in principles of human and organisational performance (HOP) improvement and operational excellence, OLTs are designed to leverage the experiences and insights of frontline workers and other stakeholders to drive continuous improvement.
An Operational Learning Team (OLT) traditionally consists of a small group of people (no more than 8 ideally) who are involved in the task, activity, or topic for discussion on a regular basis, i.e., front-line workers, coming together physically to share the knowledge, expertise, and experience, in order to identify examples of organizational drift and to recommend opportunities for improvement.
The OLT is facilitated by a trained and competent person and often sponsored or owned by a Senior Leader who has decision-making authority.
The traditional OLT is split into 3 main phases, these are:
Learn (no more than 2 hours)
Soak (ideally overnight)
Improve and Action (no more than 2 hours)
